Presentation of 5th Pillar at TedX Conference

“A stitch in time saves nine”, is a famous phrase that comes to mind every time we visit the colleges and schools for awareness campaign. As we believe that the students are future leaders and directors of the socio-political layout of our country, we reach out to them to educate them about the existing social evil, Corruption. Interesting stories about their first encounter with this social evil, when they tried to get their driver's license and passport are discussed during the awareness campaign. During these discussions, they come to know how each of them paid different fee to obtain the same license. Students are frustrated and angry, but are unaware of how to deal with this issue, and when they learn about 5th Pillar's, action plan, they are very much encouraged to take an active role in our organization.
On 9th February 2010, we were invited for conducting an RTI awareness campaign, at a convention in Vellammal Engineering College, that was attended by various colleges and corporate companies. The President of 5th Pillar Mr. Vijay Anand, gave a power-point presentation and spoke about the RTI Act and its implementation in various scenarios. He addressed 350- 400 students in the auditorium, and explained in detail about the Act and its functioning, in real life scenarios, and how to file an RTI petition, by asking the relevant questions for the concerned issue. The Zero Rupee Note was distributed to all the participants and everyone took a pledge to, neither accept nor give bribe.
The Zero Rupee Note is an important tool to fight against Corruption. The Note with the picture of Mahatma Gandhi, signifies a second freedom struggle, this time not against the outsiders but the inside violators.
