Participation of Stella Maris Students in Freedom From Corruption Campaign

People who have social awareness and conciousness, are usually empathetic regardless of differences and are socially active. Educational instiutions implant these social awareness to the students through various programs to encourage the students to enact the role of problem solvers. Stella Maris College in Chennai, have initiated a club called ISTD (Indian Society of Training and Development), were students from the college get involved to create an impact in the society by empowering the citizens.
As an NGO who share a common idea of improving the society, they were interested to learn about our organization's achievements and so were invited to address the ISTD club members of the college on 23rd February 2010. Mr. Vijay Anand, President of 5th Pillar, gave a detailed account of all the ongoing activities and philosophy of our organization in tackling the corruption problem in our society. Shortfilms, titled Incomplete India, Freedom from Corruption, and Break the Silence, portrayed the nature and extend of work being done and to be done in future to eradicate the social evil, Corruption. These films kindle the already active minds to plant their feet deep into the ground to tackle this issue.
Mr. Vijay Anand also spoke about the Right To Information Act (RTI) enacted on 2005, which is a strong asset to the common public, that is instrumental to obtain basic necessities in the rightful way. Volunteers of 5th Pillar distributed the Zero Rupee Note, a novice tool adopted by our organization to affront corrupt officials. Students and other participants then took a pledge to neither accept nor give bribe.
After the presentation during an open forum, many students voiced their grievencance about corruption, they or their relatives encountered. Mr. Anand explained the measures to adopt and also encouraged them to contact our office and get the free service provided like the filing of RTI petition. Creating awareness about this abominable issue is the first step to eradicating the problem.
