Before a baby enters this world it witnesses corruption from the womb, were the support staff and higher officials demand money for scan, blood test and other services. Once he or she is born,it witnesses the art of bribing by paying to obtain the birth certificate, community certificate, inclusion of the name in the ration card, school admission and so on. This is how corruption has embedded in our society and has changed the entire framework of our society. Corruption is a vicious cycle, which will cease to exist only if the givers stop as well as the takers.
To leave no stone unturned, 5th Pillar followed the path of folklore in street theatre, and conducted an awareness campaign at a street corner in hope of reaching the public. On Feb 10th, between 7 to 8 pm, Vijay Anand, President of 5th Pillar and Mr. Subramanian, Director of Operations at 5th Pillar, accompanied by journalist of leading newspaper in Canada, Toronto Star, conducted an awareness campaign to all the residents of the Kakkan Colony in Besant Nagar, Chennai. Volunteers of 5th Pillar distributed the Zero Rupee Note to the local residents to create an awareness about the RTI Act, and explained in detail about our role in the anti-corruption movement. Vijay Anand spoke to the public about the RTI Act and also encouraged the public to approach our organization when faced by difficult situation. He explained about the basic right to entitlement, and the amount to be paid as penalty for infarctions. The residents had numerous stories to share with the organizers about the practical situations they had encountered. The Journalist interviewed a few residents to gain their input about the social evil they encounter in their daily life.
